Windows
A short explanation of Windows in our glossary
Windows is Microsoft's operating system, first released in 1985. Originally intended as a graphical extension of MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System), it is today the most widely used operating system in the world, with a market share of more than 90%. A long-running version was Windows 10, released in July 2015, with its successor Windows 11 announced in June 2021.
Major competitors to Windows are macOS from Apple and also Linux operating systems such as Ubuntu or Mint.
