DevOps

A short explanation of DevOps in our glossary

The term DevOps describes a modern framework for software development and combines development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops). By coordinating and bringing together roles such as development, security, quality engineering and IT operations, better and more reliable products can be delivered. The aim is also to ship products with consistent stability and high quality.

DevOps is often used together with agile software development and brings a number of benefits, since it aims to avoid classic frustrations — such as late change requests from the client and unrealistic deadlines — and gets everyone involved in a product's delivery cycle working together.

  • Greater flexibility and faster adaptation to the market and competition
  • Shorter release cycles: simplifies planning and risk management
  • Reliable systems and maintained stability
  • Faster detection and direct resolution of problems
  • A continuous flow of information: accelerates innovation and ensures adaptability to the market

DevOps shapes the application lifecycle through its planning, development, deployment and operations phases. The phases depend on one another, and every role is involved in each phase to some degree.
