Prototyping

A short explanation of prototyping in our glossary

Prototyping refers to the development of a mock-up or prototype in software development and produces initial results quickly. Thanks to early feedback, problems and change requests can be identified and resolved fast.

Through prototyping, costs and required resources can be estimated more accurately, and the visual design — along with the associated interaction patterns — can be tested. Quality assurance can also be brought in at an early stage.

Types

  • Exploratory prototyping: determining requirements, assessing particular solutions and functionality; iterative and rapid creation of prototypes
  • Evolutionary prototyping: continuously extending the application until it is production-ready, using feedback from users
  • Experimental prototyping: extensive problem analysis and system specification; a prototype is created to test the feasibility of the core function and discarded once the analysis is complete
  • Horizontal: a fully rendered specific layer of the overall system
  • Vertical: a particular area of the software, showing the interactions with other components of the system

Prototyping and twigbit

At twigbit we use prototyping as part of our design process. If you need support with it, we're happy to help.
