Background
As part of the "LESS is more" project, the klimo app was built to help citizens in Kassel reduce their CO₂ footprint and take part in regional climate protection. It combines modern technology with a user-centric approach and strong data-privacy measures.
Objective
The goal was a cross-platform app and website that promote sustainable behaviour through gamification while staying fully compliant with data-privacy rules — and to engage at least 1,000 active users.
Solution
Concept phase
- Ran user-persona workshops to identify target users and tailor the design
- Developed mood boards, feature tables and user journeys as the basis for the screens
- Carried out requirements and feasibility analysis and defined the information architecture
Technology
- Flutter for a single iOS and Android codebase
- Firebase, with Google Cloud (BigQuery, Analytics) for monitoring and data management
- Webflow for the marketing website and Airtable as the content CMS
- A robust data-privacy framework built with external experts
Gamification and iteration
- Team creation, community segmentation and leaderboards for friendly competition
- Climate points and virtual rewards in a gamified city environment
- Push notifications, a quiz feature and an Advent calendar to keep people engaged
- 31 updates shipped for fixes, performance and new features

Results
- 6,400+ — Active users (target: 1,000)
- 46,597 — Completed challenges
- 2,313 — CO₂ footprints calculated
- 31 — Feature updates released
Gamification components were modularised for reuse in other projects, creating a sustainable, replicable solution for additional municipalities.
