UI - User Interface
A short explanation of the user interface in our glossary
The user interface is the visual appearance of a website or application. In app design it is the look of the app. It is the point at which a person interacts with a machine or a working device.
With software, this is often referred to as the GUI (graphical user interface). It is the graphical surface of an application, responsible for the usability of application software on a computer.
Certain functions of the software can be carried out with a click or a keystroke. The program works in the background, drawing on information from databases and inputs. The result is returned in a graphically prepared form.
The aim is not to overload the user with unnecessary information, making the software as straightforward to use as possible.
The user interface determines the user experience, because a program with a confusing graphical surface — no matter how powerful it is — will be rated negatively by users, as it confuses and frustrates them.
The user interface must therefore be designed to be as easy to understand as possible.
