Web app
A short explanation of the web app in the official twigbit glossary.
Definition
A web app ("web application") is application software that is usually based on HTML, JavaScript and CSS and can be accessed in the browser of various devices over the internet, which means no prior installation or download is required.
Differences between web apps and native apps
While native apps are programmed and installed specifically for a target platform (app development is one of the services we offer at twigbit), web apps work on all operating systems and devices that have an up-to-date web browser. Native apps are installed via the respective app store, whereas web apps require no installation. Web apps open directly in the browser and adapt to the device, which is why they can be published without an approval process. Accessing web apps through any compatible browser creates the key difference: they require a continuous internet connection.
Native apps are developed specifically for the operating system they are meant to run on. So if they are to run on several systems, a separate app has to be programmed for each operating system. Developing these therefore involves considerably more effort than with web apps.
Because of the wide range of browsers, it is not always possible to optimise web apps for every one of them. For complex applications, it is therefore advisable to fall back on a native app.
Web apps have one advantage over native apps when it comes to closing security gaps. While native apps require a download of a new version to close a security gap, a security upgrade can be implemented in the web app's software without any hassle.
Examples and the difference from a "normal" website
Many Google services such as Google Maps, Gmail and even the search engine fall into the web app category.
Other examples include various internet offerings from Amazon and eBay.
Web apps generally offer the user interactive elements so they can use the service provided. Normal websites, by contrast, are mostly informational.
